NGC 6962

Click on image for larger version.

Based on an estimated distance of 180 million light years away, NGC 6962 is an intrinsically large galaxy. Many other galaxies punctuate the field of the group; but NGC 6962 is by far the most prominent. In 2002 a supernova explosion took place in one the outer arms of this galaxy. The event added some excitment to the otherwise relatively dim and smooth arms shown here.

  • Two iterations of CCDsharp were applied to this image.
  • Digital Development (DDP) via Maxim/DL was also used in order to display the the very dim and very bright details of the image simultaneously.
